Modesty Pt. 4

Matthew 11
7 "And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?"
8 "But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses."
9 "But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet."
(KJV)

Proverbs 7
10 "And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart."
(KJV)

"Last time, we learned that the way we dress always matters to God. Let's continue today looking at what God has to say about what we wear!
2. The way you dress identifies you character and level of respect. Your heart purity and holiness should define what you wear!

In Matthew, Jesus draws a clear distinction between the clothing of a man of God and the clothing of a "soft man." The soft clothing that Jesus refers to is literally speaking of the type of clothing that clearly is feminine... In Proverbs, the same principle is applied relating to the clothing of "an harlot."

The Bible is clear in these passages that different types of people dress differently. Men of God dress one way, homosexuals dress another, and wicked women dress yet another.

The first principle is this- your dress reveals your life character. How you dress always identifies you as a particular "kind" of person. This has always been the case and always will be. Your clothing makes an outward statement of what kind of person you are on the inside.

The second principle is this- your dress reveals your level of respect for yourself and others in a particular situation.

Our culture believes in dress standards. Weddings and funerals usually cause us to dress more appropriately out of respect for those being honored or remembered. Why should we honor or respect God any less than we would a deceased person or a couple getting married?"

Modesty pt. 3

Matthew 6
24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
(KJV)

"The great news is, you don't have to be a super-geek in your dress just because your a Christian. It's not like God is asking you to wear a white robe (at least not yet) all the time! Should you dress different than the world dictates? Yes. Should your principles be determined by God and not by your favorite clothing store at the mall? Yes. Do you have to be a total, out-of-style loser? No.

The general attitude of most people is that we belong to ourselves- it's our body; we can do or wear what we want! But this is not the teaching of God's Word for His children.

It might just surprise you what God has to say about what you wear! Are you ready to hear from God and obey Him? I hope so.

1. The way you dress always matters to God.

Matthew 6:30 teaches us that it is God Who desires to "clothe us." In other words, God desires to provide the clothing I wear just as He provides everything else in my life.

We already know that God desires for our lifestyles to reflect our salvation, but the clothing we wear is a huge part of that lifestyle. What we wear should reflect the fact that Christ lives in us.

Simply put, I should be willing to identify my life as a Christian through my appearance. What I wear matters to God because it either reflects Him or it doesn't. Are you willing to honor God by choosing clothing that pleases Him?

Modesty Pt. 2

Here's the second part to the post I did on modesty last week.

"But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Which in times past were not a people, but are now the people of God; which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; Having your converstaion honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evil does, that they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation."

I Peter 2:9-12 KJB

"Do you really want your dress choices in life to be determined by media fads and pop-stars who can't even stay out of rehab long enough to finish a concert tour? Is this really the crowd you want to model your life and future choices after? Obviously not.

So, once again, you have the world's system and God's teaching. Behind the world's system is a bunch of lies, deception, and a lifestyle that will lead you seriously downhill. Behiind God's teaching, you have a loveing Heavenly Father Who longs to bless your life and future and Who longs to fulfill your heart's biggest desires.

Yes, God cares about our dress choices, and He gives us a Bible full of guiding principles upon which to base these choices. This is big stuff, and should challenge you to really think. What you wear is much more than a matter of rules or simple decisions. This isn't about just 'doing what you're told'.

No, we're going to dig a lot deeper than that. We're going to actually discover the serious heart of God on this matter. We're going to uncover the principles that form our beliefs and then our choices. It's one thing to say, 'Dress Modestly!' It's another thing entirely to consider the wealth of information God gives us behinf that one statement. These are some really great reasons why you should choose to dress God's way, and we're about the find out what they are!

Stop finding your identity in what you wear. That's what everybody else does. You are more than what you wear. In fact, what you wear is actually a reflection of who you really are. We'll see more of that next week"

I'll Take a Shot at It

Hey, I've been thinking about doing a series of post on modesty, and in my devotional for this month there is a four part series, so I thought I'd use them.

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works." I Tim. 2:9-10 KJV

"The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment" Luke 12:23 KJV

"Does God care about what you wear? I mean, really-isn't He too busy running the universe? Does how you dress really matter to Him? It does. He tells us this in His Word.

You will either be the victim of your culture or the champion of what is right in this matter. Hmmm... victim or champion?

What is culture teaching this generation about dress? Well, let's think about it for a moment. Culture seems to say the following:

  • It has to be a popular brand name.
  • It should be advertised by some pop-culture brand, team, or icon.
  • If it's on a girl, it should be tight, low-cut, or revealing.
  • If it's on a guy, it should be baggy and sloppy looking.
  • If it's denim, it should be rough, worn, and with holes.
  • If it's dressy, it should be skimpy or see-through.
  • If it's tucked in, it's "out."
  • If it's for a man, it could look feminine.
  • If it's for a woman, it should get attention
  • The sloppier looking, the cooler it is.

In short, if it's immodest, sloppy, trendy, faddish, or rebellious looking- it's in! And if you wear these things- you're in! What's that about? Come on! Please tell me you're slightly smarter than your culture thinks!

Okay- do you really want to be and automaton- mindlessly moved about by the dictator of pop-culture? Do you want pop-culture to drag you around with a ring in your nose telling you how to live and what to wear?"
